How to properly clean your Teku glass (and other stemware)

Some beer glasses and tasters you can simply pop into the dishwasher and call it a day. However stemware like our Teku glasses and any glass style with specialty printed inks or materials (ex: gold) need special care and attention. Here is a guide to how to properly clean you Teku glass and other stemware.

1. Hold the glass by the bowl just above the stem and rinse it with warm to hot water.

When you’re cleaning your glass make sure to hold it by the bowl just above the top of the stem. Holding the glass by the stem or along the rim can cause it to break (take my word for it). You would also be surprised how easy it is to have the glass slip out of your hand when you're just holding it by the stem.

When rinsing your glass you don’t want the water to be too hot because it can actually cause the glass to crack. A rule of thumb is if it’s too hot for your hands it’s too hot for the glass.

2. Use a sponge and a mild to odorless soap to clean the glass.

Avoid using anything with bristles since it can scratch the glass, and if you can, use something with a handle to make it easier to get down inside to the bottom of the bowl. When you're washing focus on the main problem areas - the rim, bottom of the inside of the glass, and the outside bowl.

If you’re like me and have a habit of leaving dirty glass overnight for “tomorrow you” to deal with, then you might need a more heavy duty soap. Alternatively, simply let it sit and soak for a bit and come back to it later.

Sponge Recommendation: If you're looking for a recommendation, this is the sponge I most recently purchased. I have no affiliation with the company who makes it and I don't receive any benefits from recommending it, it's simply the one I chose and it works really well.

3. Rinse each glass well (inside and out) with warm water and air dry upside down on a towel.

Make sure to get rid of all of the remaining soap residue. Not only with this prevent spots from forming but you’ll avoid your glasses picking up the soapy aromas and flavors which can linger and ruin your next beer or tasting.

Avoid putting the rim of the glass on a hard surfaces! This will prevent scratches or outright breakage, and it will also make sure any bacteria or dirt on the counter doesn't stick to the lip of the glass.

Note: If you live in an area with hard water you may want to dry your glasses by hand with a soft and lint-free (ex: microfiber) towel. This will also help prevent water stains from forming.

That's it! It might seem like a pain but in the end it will extend the life of your glassware and result in less accidents. If you have any questions or comments about glassware care let me know!
